Immigrants Rally in New Orleans for DACA

Immigrants brought to the US as children ask judges to keep protections against deportation

Immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children, known as "Dreamers," gathered outside a federal courthouse in New Orleans. They were there to support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which shields them from deportation. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is reviewing the Biden administration's policy on DACA, affecting around 535,000 individuals.

Legal Battle

The case involves Texas and eight other states arguing against DACA, claiming financial burdens. The Biden administration contends these states lack standing to sue. The panel of judges showed differing opinions on this argument.

Future Implications

The case is expected to reach the Supreme Court. DACA was initiated by President Obama in 2012 and renewed by President Biden. However, a 2023 ruling limited new applications but allowed existing recipients to remain during appeals. The outcome will significantly impact the lives of many immigrants who consider the U.S. their home.
